History:

Hastings Rocks is an early 19th century geological formation located at the entrance of the Carlisle Bay, Barbados. The formation earned its name due to its resemblance to the rocky coast of Hastings in England. The rocks were the site of a lighthouse, built in 1820 by William IV and destroyed by a hurricane seven years later. In 1831, the Royal Engineers were sent to Barbados to rebuild the lighthouse, which was then completed in 1834. The lighthouse, known as the ‘Gibraltar Lighthouse’, was housing a lighthouse keepers quarters, a fog horn room, a signal station and an oil store. The lighthouse remained operational until 1999, when the island switched to a radio beacon system. Today, Hastings Rocks is a popular tourist spot. The rocks are located in close proximity to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society building, and are visible from the beach. Visitors can also view the remains of the lighthouse on the nearby grassy steps. Visit one of the famous monuments of Barbados with your friends and family.
