History:

Welchman Hall Gully is a national park on the Caribbean island of Barbados, located in the parish of Saint Thomas. It has a long and varied history, starting long before European settlement of the island. It is the last remaining tropical jungle area on the island, with a unique ecosystem. The Gully was originally inhabited by the Kalinago, an Amerindian people who settled in the region around 800 BC and were later displaced by the Spanish in the 16th century. During this period, Welchman Hall Gully began to be used as a place of refuge for runaway slaves, who lived there in underground tunnels. There is evidence of how the slaves lived in the Gully, such as remains of huts and a cemetery. When the British took over Barbados in 1627, they changed the name of the Gully to Welchman Hall, after the family who owned the land at the time. This name is still used today. The area was then used as a military base during the Second Barbados Rebellion in 1816, when the Gully was fortified to protect the island from a possible French invasion. In 1939, Welchman Hall Gully was declared a national park by the Barbados government. In 2005, it was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, and is now a popular tourist destination. Today, the Gully is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, and is a great place to explore and appreciate nature.
