History:

Belleplaine, Saint Andrew, located on the south east of Barbados, is an area comprised of two distinct parishes – The Parish of Saint Andrew which includes Belleplaine and areas to the north-east, and the Parish of Saint Peter which includes Scotland, Saint James and Saint Peter. Belleplaine was first developed in 1767 when the largest estate in Barbados was subdivided into large tracts of land. The original owners of this area were the Coleridge family with George Coleridge being the principal proprietor. The name of the area, Belleplaine (meaning Beautiful Plains), most likely came from the Coleridge family. In its early days, the area was mainly populated by sugar plantation slave workers. By 1816, the number of slaves in the area had decreased substantially, but the sugar plantations remained and relied heavily on labor from Europe and the Caribbean islands. Belleplaine went through a period of economic decline in the mid 1800s due to competition from the emerging steam powered sugar mills in other parts of the island. Sugar production in the area also suffered a devastating blow when a hurricane destroyed a major portion of the Coleridge’s plantation in 1844. From then, the area’s economy shifted focus away from sugar production and towards livestock rearing and dry farming. The last sugar factory at Belleplaine was closed in the early 1900s. The advent of tourism in the mid twentieth century revitalized the Belleplaine region. With its lush, rolling hills and stunning views, the area became a popular spot for tourists to visit. The population of Belleplaine has grown substantially since then and the area now boasts multiple hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions.
