The George Washington House is a historic house in Saint Michael, Barbados. Built in the early 18th century, it is the only known property in the world at which the first president of the United States, George Washington, stayed. On his voyage to the new world, he sought refuge in Barbados due to rough weather. In 1751, Washington, at the age of 19, embarked on a four-month voyage to the new world, stopping in numerous islands. Barbados was the first island he visited. After checking into the George Washington Townhouse, the young Washington — then a surveyor — set off to explore the island and to survey some of its surrounding lands. He remained in Barbados for two months and while there, he observed the island's social customs, took summer classes, and made friends with locals. The house in Saint Michael was built around 1720 by the wealthy King family, long noted on Barbados. Today, the building is owned by the Barbados National Trust which restored the house to its original 18th-century splendor and preserved it for visitors.
