History:

The Andromeda Botanic Gardens, Saint Joseph in Barbados was founded in 1954. The gardens were started when Dr. Olive Woods, a botanist and artist, purchased a small piece of land along the edge of the sea near Saint Joseph. Dr. Woods was inspired to create a sanctuary for plants and birds that was also open for people to visit and enjoy. Within the gardens, Dr. Woods created natural habitats, trails, and paths. The original plantings included tropical hardwood trees, palm trees, shrubs, flowers, and a few vegetable crops. In the 1970s, the garden became a registered botanical garden, and soon after, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature listed it as a "Garden of International Importance". Gradually, the trails and trees of Andromeda became a popular recreational area for tourists and locals alike. Today, there are over 80 species of tropical trees, more than 300 species of plants, and a wide variety of birds on the grounds. There are also several walking trails, a meditation area, and a butterfly garden. Dr. Woods passed away in 1986, but her dream of creating a botanic garden in Barbados lives on.
