History:

Morgan Lewis Mill was built in 1727 by Robert Herman and William Elsworth. Located in the Parish of Saint Andrew, Barbados, Morgan Lewis Mill is the only water-driven mill for the island of Barbados and one of the oldest mills in the Caribbean region. It was initially used to grind sugarcane as a part of the island's sugar industry, though it has been owned and operated by the Barbados National Trust since 1982. The name of the mill comes from John Morgan Lewis, one of the first owners of the mill, who bought the mill in 1750. Under his ownership, the Morgan Lewis Mill saw many improvements, including the addition of two windmills to aid in the sugar refining process. By 1785, Morgan Lewis Mill was the most profitable sugar mill on the island. However, after Lewis' death in 1802, the fate of the mill began to decline. In 1807, it was put up for auction and bought by Sir John Gay Alleyne. Alleyne mostly used the mill to power a cotton ginning operation, though it still had some use for refining sugar. The mill declined further in 1860, falling out of productive use and into a state of disrepair. Then, in 1916, the head of the Barbados Water Authority, Sir Robert Hare, restored and renovated the mill. He made several improvements to the mill, including raising the central structure to two stories. Hare then transferred ownership of the mill to the Barbados National Trust in 1982, and in 1987 the mill's maintenance became a responsibility of the government of Barbados. The Morgan Lewis Mill is now the site of many visitors for both educational and recreational purposes.
