History:

Codrington College is an Anglican theological college located in Saint John, Barbados, founded in 1745. The college was founded through the benefaction of Christopher Codrington, a wealthy Barbadian planter and slave-owner, who lived from 1668 to 1710. Codrington bequeathed his estate, unable to devise it, on condition that it had to fund a college which would provide education in Barbados. The Barbados Assembly passed an Act of Parliament to found Codrington College on 24 February 1745. Codrington College is named after the benefactor as a result of the Codrington family's wish that their name "for ever be joined to this most excellent charitable foundation" in Barbados. Initially, the college provided education to the enslaved population of West Indian planters, either for ministerial or leadership purposes. The college aimed to provide a liberal education and spiritual nurture. Although evidence of student participation in higher education during colonial times is sparse, it is known that codrington College educated some students who served as ministers in African Methodist Episcopal churches in the United States. The college closed its doors in 1947 due to financial difficulties. It re-opened in 1956 with a new curriculum focusing on topics such as Bible studies, church history, and pastoral care. Over the years, the college has educated students from all over the world, though today's student population is mostly Barbadian.
