History:

Paynes Bay, located in the parish of Saint James in Barbados, has a long history. It is believed that its name originated in the mid-1700s when the plantation owner, Mr Payne, was granted the land by the governor of Barbados and the English Crown. The area served as a Barbados port of entry for many of the ships that sailed the trading routes between Europe, the United States, and the Caribbean. The port was used by ships of the Royal Navy, the Barbados government, and private traders. In the early 1900s Paynes Bay earned a reputation for being a tourist destination. It was considered one of the top beaches in the Caribbean and had many amenities like restaurants, cafes, and boat tours. As Barbados developed and changed in the mid-1900s, Paynes Bay’s tourist industry declined. It was not until the late 1990s when Barbados began to focus on the tourism sector as a primary source of income that Paynes Bay began to see a revival in its tourism industry. Today Paynes Bay has regained its spot amongst the top beaches and holiday destinations in the Caribbean. It also boasts many luxury amenities such as golf courses, fine dining, and resorts.
