History:
St. Peter's Church is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Barbados, located in the parish of St. Peter. Construction of the original building began in 1693 and was completed in 1699 under the direction of the rector, Reverend Danvers Stackhouse. Stackhouse, originally from Cornwall, England, had served as rector for almost 25 years prior to the completion of the building and would remain in that position until his death in 1709. The simple, most likely wooded framed, Church stood near the sea for almost 160 years until it eventually fell into disrepair. In the 1840s a new church was constructed on the site, but the original foundation and a few of the original stones remain. The church has undergone constant renovations and repairs over the years, most notably in 1900, when it was completely refurbished and reroofed. In the 1960s a most recent renovation project was undertaken. This particular project was funded by the Levi family and the Barbados National Trust. During the project the exterior and interior were extensively renovated, resulting in the finicky 19th century stonework that can be seen today. Today St. Peter's Church remains an active part of the local community. It continues to serve as an important place of worship to the people of St. Peter, hosting weekly services and monthly events throughout the year. With its rich history and continuous role within the Barbadian culture, it continues to be a symbol of faith and hope for generations to come.
