History:

Sunbury Plantation House was a great house in the parish of St. Philip in Barbados built in the early 17th century. The house is of classic plantation design and is one of the few great houses in Barbados which still stands. It is also known as Bush Hill Plantation and Sunbury Great House. The first recorded owner of the plantation was Sir John Colleton, who was granted the land in 1645 shortly after the English captured the island from the Spanish. The plantation became one of the major producers of sugar in Barbados during the colonial period. The house was destroyed in the great hurricane of 1831 and restored in 1844 by the new owners, the Freeling family. The Freelings ran the plantation for over a hundred years. During this time, the house and grounds underwent many changes. In 1912, Sir William Freeling built a newer Great House, neglecting the old one which had major structural problems due to termites. In 1978, the property was bought by Ronald Webster with the intention of restoring it and preserving the historic property. In the 1990s, the property was acquired by the Barbados National Trust. They leased it back to Mr. Webster and have since embarked on a major restoration project they are calling the Sunbury Plantation Project. The project includes restoration of the Great House and stabilization of other historic structures on the property. The project is also creating educational initiatives to promote public conservation efforts. Today, Sunbury Plantation House is a popular destination for tourists in Barbados. It is the only remaining example of classic Barbados plantation architecture and visitors can tour the grounds and learn more about Barbados’ colonial past.
