Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Barbados is a vision of faith and hope, founded by and shared with its ever-growing community of over 1200 parishioners. The church was erected in 1922 and was initially a small wooden building. It was upgraded in the late 1960s and the foundation stone was laid on January 20th, 1968. Its architecture blends with the British colonial style and is highlighted by its painted pillars and transept roofing.
The devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows or the ‘The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary’ can be traced to the 13th century, when St. Bonaventure (1221-1274), a Franciscan theologian, wrote a homily on the Seven Sorrows. The feast dates back to 15th century, and is celebrated on the Friday before Palm Sunday. The most striking feature of Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Barbados is the two large statues at the entrance modelled on Mary and Jesus in a Pieta pose.
