History:
St. Peter's is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Barbados, founded around 1629 by the first Anglican bishop of Barbados, Bishop Joseph Jackson. The church had humble beginnings with its first settlers coming to Barbados from England in 1624. The original St. Peter's was constructed out of wood and daub. In 1637, the church was rebuilt with stone walls and the tower was expanded. It received a new chancel and its first rector, the Reverend John Atkins in 1659. In 1685, St. Peter's was declared a parish church. By 1807, the old building had deteriorated and plans were made for a new parish church. Construction was completed in 1836 and the new St. Peter's was dedicated by Bishop Tripp. Over the ensuing decades, various modifications were made to St. Peter's Church, including the installation of stained glass in the windows during the 1870s and the addition of a pipe organ in 1877. In 1968, restoration work began on the church, including the replacement of some of the woodwork, the refurbishment of the walls, and the installation of a new ceiling. St. Peter's was rededicated in 1970 by Bishop Reuben Tucker. The church continues to stand today, serving as a place of worship for the people of Saint Peter Parish in Barbados.
