History:

Clifton Hall Great House, located on Highway 5 in the parish of Saint John, Barbados, is one of the oldest buildings in the island. The estate dates back to 1648, when it was purchased by Richard Rooke Lyte, an English colonist who had come to Barbados in search of wealth. In 1650, his son, Christopher Lyte, built a house on the land called Clifton. The house was occupied by the Lyte family until the 19th century. In 1875, an American dentist, Dr. Silas Upham, purchased the estate and extensively renovated it. During this period, the great house was adorned with many modern luxuries such as gas lighting and hot and cold running water. Upham continued to make improvements to the house, installing a windmill, a water tower and stable blocks. After his death, the estate passed to his daughter, Ella, and her husband, Commodore Robert Chafee of the Royal Navy, who named the estate Clifton Hall. During their ownership, the estate was visited by King Edward VIII and several members of the royal family. In the 1940s, part of the estate was purchased by the British Caribbean Bank now known as the Barbados National Bank. The bank used the grounds to develop a golf and country club, which is now the Clifton Hall Great House and Golf Course. The great house is open to the public and offers visitors a unique insight into the Barbadian colonial past.
