History:

Farley Hill National Park in Saint Peter, Barbados is a protected site with a history that goes back to the 18th century. The former Great House on the site was built around the 1790s and was originally owned by the Codrington family. The Codrington's were a powerful and wealthy plantation family, and Farley Hill was their summer estate. It was intended as a retreat from the heat of the low-lying plantations in the south of the island. The estate was expanded in the 19th century and was eventually sold to the Barbados government in 1954. It was converted into a national park in 1961 and offers visitors a variety of activities. Visitors can wander through the former gardens to take in the wildlife, enjoy views of the rolling hills, or simply relax and soak up the tranquility of the area. The Great House is now a museum and tour guides are available to provide an enlightening commentary on the history of the estate. • Farley Hill National Park is one of the Caribbean's most spectacular nature reserves. • It covers an area of approximately 39 hectares and is home to a number of different habitats, such as dry tropical forests, wooded grasslands, rock outcrops and flooded salt pans. • This park was once the site of Farley Hill House, which was the ancestral home of the late Prime Minister of Barbados, Sir Grantley Adams. • The ruins of Farley Hill House and parts of the old estate replaced by the Park, are the only remains of what was once a large and important estate. • The Park also serves as an important wildlife sanctuary for many species of wildlife including white-tailed deer, red-bellied macaws, red-necked parrots and green and white herons. • The Park also contains a number of historical and natural features such as the Great House ruins, a dry tropical forest and several ancient Amerindian activities which are still visible. • The Park has also been used as a backdrop in the popular film Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and is known to be a favourite picnic spot for many locals. • The Department of Environment and Coastal Zone Management (DECZM) declared Antelope Island, located within Farley Hill National Park, a National Park in 1987, making it the largest National Park in the Caribbean.
