History:

Trafalgar Square is a public square in the centre of Bridgetown, Barbados. It is located in the heart of the capital city of Bridgetown and was erected following the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. The Square commemorates Lord Horatio Nelson and Admiral Jervis’ victory, led by Nelson, against the French and Spanish forces. The site of Trafalgar Square has had a long and varied history. Initially the area around Trafalgar Square was known as The Green, and was Barbados’ largest outdoor market. It was built by Governor Lord Combermere in 1813 and used mainly for the sale of fruits and vegetables. In 1821, The Green was made a public square, and became known as Trafalgar Square. During the 19th century, Trafalgar Square became a popular social and gathering site for the citizens of Bridgetown, and it has remained so ever since. The monument in the center of the Square was erected in memory of Lord Nelson in 1813 and it features a statue of Admiral Jervis, Lord Nelson’s companion in the Battle of Trafalgar. In the early twentieth century,Trafalgar Square hosted numerous events and became the centre of entertainment in Bridgetown. These events included political rallies, performances, festivals, and charitable activities, for example, the Bandstand used to host musical performances and it became a very popular landmark among the citizens of Bridgetown. In addition, the emancipation of slaves was publicly celebrated with a parade around the Bandstand in 1834.
