History:

Gunsite Tombolo is located on Barbados’ south shore at St. Philip parish. It is a wilderness area with excellent hiking, bird watching, marine life and spectacular coastal views. The area also contains some of the oldest archeological sites on the island. St. Philip is one of the most well-preserved parishes in Barbados; it is home to several notable sites, such as the Morgan Lewis Windmill, the oldest working windmill in the Caribbean, and Morgan Lewis Beach, a popular swimming spot and a great surf location. Gunsite Tombolo was once used as a refuge from pirate attacks by the indigenous population and slaves. As its name suggests, the area was also utilized as a storage site for guns and ammunition, protected by a number of poorly concealed gun pits. In the 19th century, St. Philip and the surrounding area were home to significant Infrastructural development, including the construction of the Speightstown Road that connected St. Philip with the capital, Bridgetown. This development was followed by population growth and a corresponding intensification of farming activity. In the process, the foliage of much of the south side of the island was removed or disturbed. While St. Philip retains much of its rural, agricultural character today, Gunsite Tombolo is one of the few protected areas that are still relatively undisturbed, providing refuge for a diverse array of wildlife. Its unique and picturesque beaches, mangrove and wetland areas make it an ideal spot for researchers and photographers alike.
