History:

Yanardag is a 956-hectare nature reserve located in Baku, Azerbaijan. The reserve was established to preserve and protect the unique vegetation, fauna, and natural landscape of the area. Located in the Baku Bay, and covering 3/18 of the entire total coastline of Azerbaijan, it is one of the oldest nature reserves in the country and encompasses an important part of the ecological system and biodiversity of the region. The reserve was created in 1940 and is now on the list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), and the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC). Within the Yanardag Nature Reserve, there are various protected species including the Turkmenian wild goat, roe deer, bezoar ibex, and marbled polecat. The reserve is a popular tourist destination and provides numerous recreational activities such as camping, trekking, nature watching, and photography.
