History:

The Palace of Happiness is a building in Baku, Azerbaijan which was originally built in 1914 as an administrative and educational building. It was designed by architect S. Gafiyatov in the Art Nouveau style. The building is located near the Icherisheher (Old City) of Baku and is today an essential tourist attraction. Originally built for the social needs of oil workers under the guidance of Shamsi-Asker bey Vazirov, the Palace of Happiness was once a three-story building which included a cafe, a library, a reading hall, a technical “laboratory”, an auditorium and an open balcony terrace. After the October revolution, the building was used for a variety of purposes including an executive committee, a supply department and a house of culture. The building underwent renovation in 1934 and in 1993 during which time it was repaired and made earthquake-resistant. In 1998, the building was officially recognized as a historic-architectural monument. In 2001, the palace was reopened and now serves as a museum with various exhibitions, a theatre, a restaurant, and a cinema. The palace offers an interesting perspective on traditional Azerbaijani culture. Visitors can find traditional instruments, household items, and textiles used in the past by people living in the region. In 2014, the 100th anniversary of the palace was celebrated. The event was held in the presence of prominent members of the local and national government, as well as numerous foreign guests.
