Ancient Ganja Gate (also known as “Graberdlu”) is believed to have been built in the 12th century, during the reign of Shirvanshah Manuchehr III. It is located in the walled city of Baku in Azerbaijan and is the only surviving structure from the old city. Shirvanshah Manuchehr III was a ruler of the Shirvanshah dynasty, which reigned in the area of modern Azerbaijan from the 10th to the 16th centuries. Manuchehr was known for unifying the different tribes and clans of the Caucasian region, and for his formidable leadership. He also founded and re-built the walled city of Baku and ordered the construction of the now-famous Ganja Gate. The gate is named after the nearby town of Ganja (now called Elizavetpol, or Ganja City).
