Brief History:
Aghdam Mosque is located in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam District and is one of the oldest mosques in the country. The origins of the mosque date back to at least the 16th century, when it was a thriving cultural centre in an area which was then part of the Safavid Empire. The mosque is believed to have been built by architect Haji Hagverdi in the 16th century, and is one of the most important monuments of Safavid-era Azerbaijan. Aghdam Mosque was severely damaged throughout the 19th and 20th centuries mainly due to wars and natural disasters, but is now under the protection of the State Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Azerbaijan. The mosque is currently closed to visitors due to its precarious state, but continues to form an integral part of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage. It is one of the most famous mosque in Azerbaijan which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Aghdam Mosque is a historical mosque located in the village of Aghdam in the Azerbaijan Republic. It was built in 1856 and is one of the last mosques in this southern region of the Caucasus. The mosque is representative of the classical era of Azerbaijani architecture, featuring a single domed structure with decorative and ornate features on the facade. The main structure is preceded by a portico with five domes, supported by four corner pillars and two central ones. The interior is richly painted with both geometric patterns and Quranic syllables. Around the building are many old cemeteries, which provide valuable insight into the past. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
