The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world located in Vienna, Austria and has served as a major symbol of Vienna's culture since the 19th century. Founded in 1869, the Vienna State Opera is one of the busiest opera houses in the world, giving around 50 operas a year, as well as numerous ballets. The Vienna State Opera had a relatively long and storied history. The opera house itself was built on the site of an old court theatre in 1869, during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The original house had seating for only one thousand and featured an eclectic mix of architectural styles. In 1868, the royal architect August Sicard von Sicardsburg was commissioned to build a new, larger theatre. His plans proposed a structure with 4,500 seats and a horseshoe-shaped vaulted ceiling. The Emperor Franz Joseph I officially opened the State Opera on May 25, 1869, as part of his coronation celebration. From that day until 1923, the Vienna State Opera served as the Imperial Court Opera House, and many of the country's most prestigious composers, including Franz Lehár and Gustav Mahler, conducted there.
