It opened in1926 as Salzburg Airport and was a major center for civil aviation during the inter-war period. It was later renamed Salzburg-Mozart Airport in 1968 to honour the city’s most famous son, the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The airport has witnessed significant expansion and development in recent years. In 1997, the runway was extended and a new terminal opened in 2004. It is now one of the busiest airports in Austria, handling over 5 million passengers each year.
