St. Michael Kirche In Austria: History,Facts, & Services

St. Michael Kirche is a historic Roman Catholic church located in the Bavarian village of Hohenwart in the district of Eichstätt, Germany. Built in 1712, it stands as a testament to the strong faith that has been part of the inhabitants of Hohenwart for centuries. History The parish of Hohenwart was established in 745 and the current church is of a much younger age. The first church was built on the site of the present church in around 1000 which was later replaced by a Late Gothic building in 1620 which comprised of two naves and two towers. When that building started to show signs of wear and tear, a construction competition was held in 1710 in order to find a suitable design to replace it. A local man called Jakob Welsch won the competition and construction of the new church began in 1712. The new building was made of sandstone and was dedicated to St. Michael on September 29th, 1713. Facts St. Michael Kirche has a Baroque style which was very popular at the time of its construction. The single-nave main building is 27.5 meters long and 8.3 meters wide, whilst the towers have a height of 26 meters. The interior of the church features four stone pillars and murals that represent the history of Hohenwart. The richest pieces of this church are the Baroque altar, the crucifix of Christ and the Holy Spirit Altar. Services The church has a rich and vibrant history and continues to play an important role in the spiritual life of the people of Hohenwart. Services are held here every Sunday with the celebration of the Eucharist and the annual feast of St. John the Baptist taking place in the first week of July. The church also hosts special services dedicated to the various patron saints of Hohenwart as well as special processions taking place on Corpus Christi. St. Michael Kirche is also a venue for concerts, recitals and other events held throughout the year.
