History:
The Residenz Museum (German: Residenzmuseum) is a museum located in the historic Untersberg wing of the Residenz Palace in Salzburg, Austria. It houses the princely collections of the Archbishops and Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg and has been open as a museum since 1834. The Residenz Palace was built in 991 A.D., serving as the residence of successive Archbishops until the 19th century. The palace was expanded and remodeled in the 16th century and functioned as the residence of the Prince-Archbishops until the early 19th century. During the Napoleonic Wars (1797-1814) and the Revolutions of 1848, the Residenz Palace became a public property and was largely neglected. In 1809, the main residence was destroyed by a fire. After the walls of the palace were restored, the Untersberg wing of the Palace was remodeled by Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Schrobenhausen to create the Residenz Museum in 1834. The Royal Collections were transferred to form the core principle of the museum’s holdings. In the early 20th century, the Residenz Museum was closed and the collection of paintings was transferred to the Salzburg Museum. The Residenz Museum was re-opened in 1979 and has since presented a full history of the Residenz Palace and the princely families who lived there. The museum's exhibits include collections of weapons, costumes, and furnishings, as well as interactive exhibits on the history of the palace. Today, the Residenz Museum remains a popular attraction in the city of Salzburg and a key source for visitors to learn about the city’s rich history.
