History:

The Liechtenstein Garden Palace (Liechtensteiner Gartenpalast) in Vienna is a large palace complex located in the fourth district of Vienna, Austria. Built between 1721 and 1746 for the Princely Family of Liechtenstein, it is one of the most important Baroque palace complexes in the city and is home to several collections of paintings, sculptures and antiques. It is also a popular tourist attraction. Prior to its construction, the space the palace now occupies was used by the Jacobites and Jesuits for cultivating vegetables. In 1719, Prince Johann Adam vom und zu Liechtenstein (the first member of the current princely family) purchased the area and commissioned an Italian court architect, Giannozzo Manuzzi, to design a palace complex. Manuzzi proposed a grand residential palace with two wings, gardens and pavilions, although this plan was scaled back in 1722 to the current size (in order to reduce costs) and was completed in 1746. The Liechtenstein Garden Palace is made up of several buildings including the main palace, the Winter Palace, the Upper Pavilion and the Lower Pavilion. The main palace contains several important works of art including canvases by Rubens, Vieira da Silva and Antoine Watteau as well as sculpture pieces by Canova and Puget. The Winter Palace includes the family chapel and the state rooms. The Upper Pavilion is a glass-enclosed structure for concerts and is often used for private concerts as well as for culture and business events. The Lower Pavilion is a terraced garden with views of the Danube River and the Vienna Woods. The palace complex has been owned by the Liechtenstein family ever since it was built and is now a popular tourist attraction.
