Prominent Features:
The world-renowned Art Brut Center Gugging is located near Vienna, Austria. The center was founded in 1976 to showcase artwork created by individuals who are not traditionally seen as artists, such as patients of psychiatric institutions and people who have suffered trauma. Today, the center is renowned for its extensive collection of work by these previously-undervalued creators. The work of the art center and its resident artists is often featured in major international exhibitions, and the center also hosts its own annual showings of both established and emerging talent. The center’s most notable resident is Maria Gugging, an Austrian artist who has been living and working in the institution since the late 1970s. Though she had to overcome struggles with mental illness, Maria has become celebrated for her powerful, emotionally-charged artwork, which often addresses the difficulties of living with mental illness and incorporates autobiographical elements. Her work has been featured in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Gugging's artwork has won accolades such as the prestigious cultural prize awarded by the Austrian government in 2019. History:
The Art Brut Center Gugging is an Austrian institution which houses and presents the artwork of a diverse group of outsider artists. The center, located in Gugging, Austria (a village located just outside Vienna), was founded in 1984 after a group of local mental health care professionals noticed the artistic talent of patients within nearby psychiatric institutions. From there, Art Brut Center Gugging was formed as a charitable, educational and therapeutic organization with a focus on experiencing and presenting artwork from artists who produced artwork “outside the mainstream.” The center is named after Maria Gugging, a nun who, in 1921, opened one of the first institutions providing care for psycho-socially and psychiatrically handicapped people in Austria. Since its inception, Art Brut Center Gugging has sought to provide an environment in which international art audiences and art historians could gain an understanding of outsider art and the artists who create it. Since its founding, Art Brut Center Gugging has undertaken several initiatives to promote and celebrate the artwork of its featured artists. In 2014, it launched the Gugging International Art Award, a yearly prize which celebrates and promotes the work of outsider artists worldwide. The center has also hosted a variety of exhibitions, such as the traveling “Out of the Chaos” exhibition which celebrated the artistic creation of Art Brut’s residents and highlighted the center’s efforts to make the artistic creations of “outsider” artists more accessible. Additionally, Art Brut Center Gugging has established a number of partnerships with local, regional, and international organizations to further the promotion and appreciation of outsider art. Today, Art Brut Center Gugging has become a major cultural center in Gugging and continues to bring the work of its featured artists to a larger audience.
