Established in 1787, St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic church in Antigua-and-Barbuda. Located in the small village of Barbuda, the church serves as a spiritual center for the predominantly Catholic population of the island. Originally built to accommodate the Irish immigrants who came to Barbuda in the seventeenth century, St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church now serves all Catholic parishioners in Barbuda. The first Irish immigrants in Barbuda arrived in 1689 when a group of farms, livestock and slaves set up a settlement called Irish Town. During this period, Catholicism was the predominant religion practiced in the Irish countryside. A friar from the nearby island of Montserrat brought a small group of Catholic converts with him and established a mission village in Barbuda. In 1787, construction began on the first permanent church building, officially known as St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. The same year, a Dominican friar who arrived in Barbuda with the new wave of Irish immigrants, Fr. Timothy Riordan, became the church's first pastor. He used his knowledge of Irish music and culture to bring the Catholic faith to life in Barbuda. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Catholic Church continued to play an important role in the life of Barbuda. In 1840, a larger church was built on the same site as St. Patrick's and in 1936 a convent was established next to the church.
