History:

Cades Bay is located on the west coast of Antigua and is a popular destination for tourists. It has been an important area for centuries, with evidence of human settlement on the site as far back as 4500BC. It is the site of archaeological ruins of a settlement made by the Arawak people who inhabited the island around 600BC. The area became important to the Europeans when Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to the Caribbean in 1493. He named the island "Antigua" and the bay was named "Cades Bay" after him. During the 17th century, the French and English settled on the island, and the bay became an important trading center. It was also a pirate haven and was popular amongst smugglers, as the waters surrounding the bay were shallow and afforded refuge in shallow coves and bays. In the late 18th century, Cades Bay became an important part of Antigua's sugar industry.
