History:

Winthorpes Bay in Antigua and Barbuda is a historical, cultural, and ecological treasure, once visited by Christopher Columbus himself. The bay, known by the locals as Deep Bay, has a long and storied history beginning in the 16th century with the arrival of Europeans. Winthorpes Bay was the site of a trading post established in 1588 by Sir John Winthorpe, an English investor and explorer. It became a center for trade between Europeans, the Siboney (an indigenous Carib group), and the Arawaks. Here, the Europeans traded among themselves and with the natives, exchanging goods such as tobacco, cloth, metal, guns, and rum. At the time, the Bay was popular because of its good harbor making it a safe port of call for ships, a source of fish, and other food sources. It was also used for trade, since its depths could accommodate a variety of cargo. In 1678, Antigua was colonized by the British. At this time Winthorpes Bay was used as an anchorage by vessels during storms and other difficult weather conditions as it was considered safer than the other ports, such as Nelson's Dockyard, which had more exposed reefs. As it became a popular port of call during this time, the Bay eventually earned the name of Winthorpes Bay in honor of its founder. Further development of the area occurred as the British built roads and military forts at the nearby locations of Parham and English Harbour to protect the settlements. This era of development also saw the construction of a lighthouse, built on Robert's Point in 1817.
