History:

Mount St. John’s Medical Centre is the oldest and largest hospital in Antigua and Barbuda, established in 1950. It is the major referral hospital for the island of Antigua and is one of the main teaching hospitals for the University of the West Indies (UWI) School of Medicine within the region. Originally, the hospital was a single-story building with 42 beds. Throughout the years, the hospital has grown significantly due to the increasing demand for medical services within the region. In 1972, the hospital added an Intensive Care Unit, pediatric and general wards, and laboratories as well as a pharmacy. In 1978, a major expansion project was completed, which included tansformation of the hospital into a two-story building with 128 beds. In July 2006, the hospital was converted into a public/private institution, allowing for greater opportunity for modernization of services, additional expansion of the facility, and the incorporation of advanced technology. In 2010, the hospital was granted World Health Organization recognition as a Baby-Friendly Hospital, a prestigious recognition given to health facilities that practice breastfeeding support. In February 2011, the Antiguan Government, the Ministry of Health, and the UWI School of Medicine launched a project to make Mount St. John’s a modern teaching hospital providing healthcare to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and the region. In recent years, the hospital has undergone a range of major expansions and renovations, with the opening of a new critical care unit, a new emergency department, a modern chemotherapy suite, a new laboratory, a telemedicine suite, and an advanced cardiovascular center.
