History:
Little Ffryes Beach in Antigua-and-Barbuda is a well-known Caribbean beach situated on the north coast of Antigua between Darkwood Beach and Jolly Beach. The earliest recorded mention of Little Ffryes Beach was by explorer, Admiral Charles Knowles, in 1784 during his navigation of the Caribbean. The site was originally known as Ffryes Bay and was home to a coaling station during the British era. In 1662, the taino people who inhabited the island used the area for fisheries, which also made it desirable to the British and French Kingdoms who were vying for ownership of Caribbean islands in the 1700’s. The beach was known as the site where international conflict between Britain and France were waged in 1666 when British forces declared their ownership of the land. In 1773, a French naval squadron, led by the Duc de Bouille, flew the tricolor of France, defending the French claim to the area. It is this episode of history that inspired the name of the beach. Throughout the late 18th century, the area experienced conflict as Britain and France vied for control of the area. By the 19th century, Antigua was secure as part of the British Empire and Little Ffryes Beach, and its local village, was a popular haunt for locals, and even tourists from overseas, to enjoy the white sandy shores, shady palm trees, and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. The beach’s local village would often host various festivities and celebrations, including the renowned John Bull Festival, which is still held annually. Today, Little Ffryes Beach is still a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, with its calm blue waters and white sands being a point of attraction for beachgoers in the area.
