Dutchman’s Bay Beach is located on the southeast coast of Antigua and Barbuda. It is a small, quiet beach which offers an array of activities such as swimming, snorkeling, diving, relaxing and enjoying its pristine waters and stunning natural beauty. The beach, as its name implies, got its name from a Dutch man, Peter de Porkerez, who used it as his landing beach in 1635 when he first arrived in the Caribbean. In 1648, de Porkerez and his crew landed on the beach and built a fort on the peninsula where the beach is located. The fort was destroyed in 1654 by the Spanish but its remains can still be seen today. Dutchman’s Bay Beach is also known for its historical significance as an important part of Antigua and Barbuda’s slave revolt in 1715. Led by the enslaved Akwamu people of Ghana, the revolt began on the beach and lasted for over a month. After being defeated, the Akwamu people were forced to make a new home in Georgia, USA.
