History:
Deep Bay is a small, picturesque harborside town that lies on the southeastern coast of Antigua-and-Barbuda. It has a rich historic past dating back to the 1600s when the English settlers arrived in the area. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1632 under the leadership of Captain William Sedgwick. The settlement was called Deep Bay by the English settlers due to its large sea bay filled with deep water. The earliest buildings in Deep Bay were destroyed during a hurricane in 1688. In 1784, Deep Bay expanded under the direction of Thomas Crowley to become the main merchant port of Antigua-and-Barbuda. During this time, Deep Bay began to be a hub of activity with an increasing number of ships landing in the harbor and merchandise being imported from England and other places all over the world. The harbor was also home to a lucrative fishing industry. In the mid-1800s, Deep Bay experienced a major setback when the sugar industry began to decline in Antigua-and-Barbuda. This caused a dramatic decrease in the population of the town and its importance began to wane. However, in the early 1900s, tourism and the fishing industry began to revive the village. Today, Deep Bay remains a small port with a warm atmosphere. It is still a hub of activity with an active fishing industry and an ever-growing tourism industry. The town has preserved its historic past, creating a charming atmosphere of the past that has been embraced by all who visit.
