History:

Pares village is a small village located in the northwest corner of the island of Antigua-Barbuda. It was first settled in the late 18th century by a group of African slaves who had been brought to the island from the Gold Coast, now Ghana. The slaves named the village ‘Para’, which is an Akan word meaning ‘place of comforts’. This name was later changed to ‘Pares’. The people of Pares lived off the land, growing maize and other crops for subsistence. They were also involved in fishing and farming. By the end of the 19th century, many of the inhabitants had converted to Christianity, and churches were established in the village. In 1966, Pares village became an official village when it was established by an Act of Parliament. This Act granted the village a local government council, as well as the right to take part in the local elections. In the 20th century, Pares village underwent rapid change with the introduction of modern infrastructure such as roads, electricity and telecommunications. This enabled the village to develop economically and set up several small businesses.
