History:

Pearns Point is a settlement located on the western coast of the Caribbean Island of Antigua and Barbuda, in the parish of St. John. From the 15th century until the late 18th century, the region was critical to the islands’ history, becoming the site of some of the earliest colonial settlements. The region was first officially settled in 1632 when Thomas Warner, who was then Governor of British Antigua, established Fort Charles just off the coast of Pearns Point. This fort was built to secure the Antiguan archipelago and protect the region from Spanish or French intruders. The area also served as a base for the celebration of Christian holidays. In 1769, the first Anglican mission station on the sire of the present-day Pearns Point Anglican Church was establlished and it served as a mission station for the Church of England from then until 1830. The Church continues to be an important part of the local culture. In the late 18th century, Pearns Point was very active in the maritime industry. The development of the modern harbor saw it become the busiest port in the entire Caribbean, serving as an important hub of trade for the region. In addition, the area also served as a base for slave ships to help transport slaves from Africa to work in the sugar plantations. At the start of the 19th century, Pearns Point was the main home of a number of prominent African-Caribbean merchants. The area remained an important economic centre of Antigua until the early 20th century, when the maritime industry moved away from the region. Today, Pearns Point is mostly known for its natural beauty, with the area offering visitors with stunning views of the sea. There are a number of small fishing villages and resorts in the area, and visitors can enjoy a variety of water-based activities including sailing and diving.
