History:

Darkwood Beach is located in the parish of St. Peter in Antigua-and-Barbuda. This particular beach has quite a unique journey in its history. In the 1500s, Early Spanish Settlers were among the first to enjoy the peaceful waters. In the early 1600s, the French settled in the area, claiming it for King Louis XIV, much to the dismay of the Spanish. In 1644, The British took control and the island was given the name Antigua, which means “ancient” in Spanish. During colonialism, the island was used to produce sugar, and African slaves were brought to help bolster the crop production. The British also built forts on the island, which still exists today. Darkwood Beach was a fishing and trading hub of a small village that rose up out of the slavery conditions. It quickly became an escape from daily oppressive toil in the sugar plantations. In the late 1900s, the island country moved from British to internal rule, and has become a major tourist destination. Darkwood Beach has been developed into a major tourist attraction, providing customers with an array of services and activities, from restaurants and beach bars to hotels and water sports. The area has grown in popularity, due to its breathtaking views and laidback lifestyle. Today, Darkwood Beach is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, coconut tree-lined shorelines, and amazing Caribbean sunset views.
