History:
The area known as Soldier Bay is located on the northeastern side of the Caribbean island of Antigua. It is a popular area for swimming, snorkeling, and other beach activities. During the 17th century, the British Navy used the harbor at Soldier Bay as a station for their ships. This station was eventually replaced by the more strategic Nelson's Dockyard, located on the southern side of the island in English Harbour. During the early 18th century, the Royal Navy had several ships stationed at Soldier Bay in order to protect the valuable sugar trade. In 1759, 4,000 soldiers were stationed at the harbor to guard the goods and people passing through. This was the beginning of what would eventually become known as Soldier Bay. A garrison was built here to house the soldiers, and by 1793, the barracks had grown into a village. During the following years, Soldier Bay became the principal port of Antigua, with ships transporting cotton, indigo, and sugar from the island's sugar plantations. In 1809, the British Navy set up a prison for pirates that was located in Soldier Bay. This prison was eventually replaced by the prison and naval hospital located in English Harbour. Today, Soldier Bay is a popular tourist destination. It is home to the Indian Creek Marina, a picturesque boatyard, and a number of bars and restaurants. It also boasts some of the most stunning beaches the Caribbean has to offer. Visit one of the famous monuments of Antigua-and-Barbuda with your friends and family.
