History:

Bird Island is a small, sandy, six-acre islet off the south-eastern coast of Antigua, located approximately two miles from Green Island and immediately east of the larger Council Island. This islet is believed to have been once part of a much larger island known as Rupert's Island, which was found to the east of Council Island. Bird Island was, until the late 17th century, the home of the Carib Indian community known as Seleps. Archaeological remains and indigenous artifacts have been uncovered on the island, suggesting that there was a large settlement. As the tribe dwindled in numbers they were assimilated by the Arawak and Carib people living on Antigua. In the mid-18th century, the British colonized the island and christened it Bird Island because of the abundance of sea birds that nested there. During the colonial period, the island was off-limits to everyone except British government and naval personnel. In the 1900s, Bird Island became a tourist destination with the opening of a hotel, which was demolished in the 1980s due to the damage caused by the various hurricanes that had damaged it. Today, the island is a popular nesting ground for various bird species and is home to a lighthouse and small lighthouse keeper's residence.
