Long Island is one of two main islands of the nation of Antigua and Barbuda, located in the Caribbean region, east of Puerto Rico. The island is 28 miles (45 km) long and 13 miles (21 km). The first Europeans to arrive on the island were the Spanish, who arrived in early 15th century and named the island San Juan. It wasn't until 1632 when the British showed up and renamed the island Long Island. During the 1700s, Long Island served as an important military base for the British fleet. The island was home to a large naval station, watchtower, and shore batteries. The island was used as an important staging area for supplies, troops, and naval vessels in support of the war against the French in the Caribbean. In the late 1700s, the island was colonized by the British and sugar plantations were established, fueled by the slave labor of African and Indian laborers. The island soon became the leading sugar producer in the Caribbean and Long Island became known as "The Sugar Island". By the 1800s, Long Island was divided into three parishes - Saint Peter's, Saint George's, and Saint Paul's. During this time, much of the prosperity on Long Island was realized through smuggling and piracy. This led to tensions between the British and the islanders, culminating in the Brown's Riot of 1805. Over the next century, Long Island would slowly transition from an agricultural center to a commercial and tourist hub.
