History:

Darkwood Bay is located on the northeastern coast of Antigua. It is a wide bay with protected waters, sandy beaches, and coral reefs. It has long been a popular destination for sailors, both recreational and professional. The earliest recorded history of Darkwood Bay dates back to the early 1620s, when a party of British settlers and soldiers, led by William Jackson, were shipwrecked near the bay. Jackson and his party used the bay and its resources to survive and built a settlement at the mouth of the bay, which was named Jackson’s Cape. This settlement of Jackson's Cape would eventually become the city of St. John's, the capital of Antigua. Darkwood Bay became a common trading post for pirates from the 17th century onwards. In the 1850s, it was a regular target for raids by pirates and slave traders. As a result, many locals living in the area fled, leaving the bay relatively deserted. The construction of Fort James in 1867 helped to protect the bay from piracy and also led to more economic development in the area. By the turn of the 20th century, the bay was becoming a popular destination for fishermen and yachtsmen.
