History:
Jolly Harbour is located in the southwest corner of Antigua, one of the two main islands of the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. This vast complex of a marina village and resort, complete with a shopping mall, golf course, and other amenities, has been in existence since the 1970s and has experienced long-term growth since that time. The origins of Jolly Harbour can be traced back to the English colonization of Antigua in 1632. The British saw the sheltered horseshoe-shaped cove as an ideal location for a safe harbor. In the 1750s, they began construction of a roadstead which protected ships from the Atlantic Ocean swells. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the harbor was used as a trading post for the export of Caribbean sugar and molasses between the British islands. In the 1970s, Jolly Harbour Marina was established by a Canadian developer, Silver Sands, and slowly transformed into a bustling tourist destination. It now consists of over 1400 villas, apartments, condos and townhouses spread over more than 250 acres of white sand beaches. There are shops, bars, restaurants, medical facilities and banks all accessible within walking distance of each other. In recent years, the marina has become an increasingly popular port of call for yacht owners visiting Antigua-and-Barbuda. The marina's six piers can accommodate nearly 400 motor and sailboats, ranging in size from 25 to 200 feet in length, and its year-round safety and security are considered some of the best in the Caribbean. Furthermore, the area boasts some of the finest shopping, and live entertainment are always available in the marina’s grand pavilion. The future of Jolly Harbour looks bright, as continuous investment upgrades and improvements are expected to continue. As the Antiguan government steps up its commitment to international commerce, Jolly Harbour is well-placed to benefit from the strategic investments that are being made in this stunning Caribbean nation and its tourism industry.
