Mount Obama, formerly known as Boggy Peak, is a 450 meter high peak located in the parish of St. Mary in the island nation of Antigua-and-Barbuda. It was officially renamed Mount Obama in November 2009 to honor the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. Earlier on, it was known as Boggy Peak. The renaming of the peak was a collaborative effort between then Prime Minister of Antigua-and-Barbuda Hon. Baldwin Spencer and President Obama following a friendly visit between the United States and Antigua-and-Barbuda. The historic peak had been home to Fort George, which was built in 1706 by the British military as an outpost for strategic surveillance of the Central American region. After two centuries of conquering forces and gradual decommissioning, the fort was dismantled in 1975. Throughout its lifetime, the fort struck a scenic atmosphere with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and Pinching Bay. Mount Obama was formally inaugurated in February 2011.
