History:

Indian Town National Park is a 28 acre park located in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The park is home to a variety of wildlife including Barbuda land hermit crabs, flamingos, West Indian whistling ducks, West Indian manatees and many other species of birds, reptiles and mammals. The park is also renowned for its historic importance, being the region’s first indigenous site of potential archaeological importance. Indian Town National Park is one of the last remnants of a vibrant, pre-colonial, indigenous culture. The indigenous people of the region are believed to have settled in the area 1200 years ago. The site is said to have been a meeting place for the native people and a major trading port. The original settlement at Indian Town is believed to have been made up of huts, built from the local soil (clay) and lined with coconut husks. In 1997, the government of Antigua and Barbuda officially declared the site to be a national park, giving it the protection it rightfully deserves. Since then, the park has been restored to its original glory and is now a popular tourist destination.
