St. Mark's Church was originally constructed and consecrated by the Right Reverend William Henry Brent in 1719. At the time, Barbuda was administered and governed by the British colonies of Antigua and Nevis. The original structure consisted of a simple wooden church, with brickwork and masonry being added in 1825. In the 19th century, the church underwent a series of renovations, with the first major renovation occurring in 1873. This renovation included the installation of a new bell tower and the addition of a two-story porch. In 1901, the exterior of the building was painted in the traditional white and green of the Church of the Province of the West Indies. The church also served as the center of the Barbudan community in the early 20th century. It was the site of weddings, funerals and community gatherings.
