History:

Freemans Village is located in the parish of Saint Mary on the Caribbean island of Antigua. This village dates back to the mid 1700s when Jonathan Freeman, an African man who was freed from slavery, purchased land and began to settle the area. Freeman named the village after himself in commemoration of his freedom. Freeslaves and their descendents, from countries including Africa, Jamaica, India and St. Kitts, took up land in the hillside and started to build houses. As Freedmen found their freedom, they built up the small fishing village and many of the locals supplied herbs and spices to nearby Fort Barrington which was used by the British forces. Freeman’s Village became one of the most diverse settlements in Antigua-Barbuda, with freed slaves from different nations living alongside Indian and Chinese immigrants who had moved to the island. The multicultural village also had open-air markets where people traded goods, fresh produce from the surrounding farms and slaves who were freed. As the years passed, the village grew but retained its unique atmosphere due to the diverse population. During the 1920s and ‘30s, a Baptist church was erected as well as the post office, police station and a small school. The village continued to develop over the years and it is now home to a significant population of descendants of freemen.
