History:
Codrington College is a college in Antigua and Barbuda that has been in operation since 1745. It was founded by Col. Christopher Codrington, a distinguished admiral in the Royal Navy who bequeathed most of his estate for the foundation of a college and several other charitable and educational purposes. Codrington College has a long and proud history of producing prominent leaders in the Caribbean who have helped shape the region. It has contributed significantly to the development of the region by training and educating thousands of students over the centuries. The concept for Codrington College was first proposed in 1743 as a school for young people of the Leeward Islands (as the Eastern Caribbean was then known) in order to secure the moral and religious instructions of the Anglican religion. The college was to be endowed with the substantial antiguan estate of Col. Codrington who had expressed his intention to support the education of native inhabitants. In addition to his estate, Codrington also bequeathed just over 4000 British pounds for the setting up and maintaining of the college, which was officially established on Feb 16th, 1745 in the city of St John's, Antigua. Today, Codrington College is a registered charity in the United Kingdom and an accredited, degree-awarding institution in Antigua and Barbuda. It specializes in theological and religious studies, as well as liberal arts. In addition to the degree courses, it also offers a number of certificate programs, workshops and seminars. It is also one of the few places in the Eastern Caribbean where the study of classical Greek and Hebrew can still be found. The college today continues to offer a range of courses in the areas of Education, Applied Social Sciences and Theology. Over the years, it has also implemented several practical training programs in Food and Beverage Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Computer Science, Business Administration and Professional Engineering, to promote an environment of relevance in post-secondary education. Codrington College also offers a number of outreach initiatives to local churches, schools, and organizations in the Caribbean, including grants and scholarships to students and contributions to local charities.
