History:
The area of Palmetto Bay was first settled in the late seventeenth century when a family of Quakers from England, known as the Medleys, purchased a large parcel of land on the north coast of what is now called Antigua and Barbuda. The Medleys established a sugar plantation and began to grow cotton in the surrounding fields. Over time, the Medley family developed their estate into a thriving enterprise, known as Palmetto Bay Plantation. The plantation flourished for over two centuries; up until the mid-twentieth century when its lands were divided among the local inhabitants. The historic development of the area of Palmetto Bay has been closely linked to the fortunes of the sugar industry in Antigua. After the abolishment of slavery, the plantation was subdivided and leased to a series of tenant families and agricultural laborers. In later years, the small settlement of Palmetto Bay slowly developed as more families began to settle in the area. By the 1950s, it had become a vibrant, predominantly African-Caribbean community. In the late 1980s, many of the residents of Palmetto Bay were relocated to the nearby St. John’s suburb of New Maranham, as many of the homes in the area had become uninhabitable. Today, Palmetto Bay remains a small village where some original families have managed to remain despite the numerous relocations. Despite its modest size, it is a thriving community with excellent access to the many amenities of St. John’s. The people of Palmetto Bay take great pride in their close-knit community and its unique cultural heritage. Visit one of the famous monuments of Antigua-and-Barbuda with your friends and family.
