Shahr-e Gholghola, or the City of Screams, is an ancient ruined fortress in northern Afghanistan. It was built in 1222 by the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan to subdue the city of Herat, but was destroyed when it failed to protect the city against the invading armies of Timur in 1383. Today, the ruins of Shahr-e Gholghola stand as a testament to the region’s tumultuous history. The ruins of the former city and its garrison consist of two parts: a partly ruined citadel in the top of the hill, known as the "Desert Citadel," and a large lower city nearby which was surrounded by a wall. The walls of the city remain largely intact. The city is located in the district of Baghlan in northern Afghanistan. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Afghanistan
