History:

The Friday Mosque (Jami’-i Masjid) of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan is one of the oldest and most iconic religious sites in the region. It is believed to have been established in the 14th or 15th century, during the Timurid era of Afghan History. The mosque is located in the civic center of Kunduz city, next to an old fort and the Riverouz Khan. The mosque is rectangular, with four minarets and a flat roof. Inside, the courtyard is paved with clay tiles with two arcades, delimited by columns. The mosque has three domes, two of which are reconstructed, as well as a mihrab (prayer niche). The mosque also has an inscription which dates it to the years 859–940 AH (1455–1533 AD). The mosque appears to have suffered minor damage in war through the ages, but much of the original structure has been preserved. The mosque underwent renovation works during the rule of Abdul Karim Khan (1885–1901) which included restoration of parts of the arcades and the mihrab, as well as painting a façade of the main building in yellow. Recently, the mosque was again renovated and declared a National Monument by President Hamid Karzai during a visit in August 2008. The restoration of the original structure of the mosque has been made possible thanks to the financial support of a member of the local community and assistance of the Afghan ministry of culture.
