History:
Guldara Gardens, located approximately twenty kilometers west of Kabul, is an ancient city-style garden that dates back to several hundred years ago. The gardens were first constructed by the King of Kabul, Ibrahim Khan, in the 1600s, who planned the gardens as a luxurious resting retreat for royal visitors. The gardens features extensive trees, shrubs, and flowers, which are surrounded by a wall of crenulated stone. It is believed that a Royal Palace was once situated on the grounds but that it has long since been destroyed. In later centuries, the garden became a popular location for royal parties and festivals. During this time, the gardens were further expanded to include small buildings and pavilions. This period also witnessed the addition of a long avenue of trees as well as a fountain and orchard on either side of the garden. The Gardens survived both the civil war of the 1980s and the Taliban occupation of the 1990s. In 2005, it was reopened to the public after renovations. Today, visitors can explore the garden’s ancient remains and enjoy its lush vegetation. While there, visitors can also visit the nearby Guldara Museum, which contains artifacts related to the garden’s history.
